X Marks the spot, right? Well, as you create your very own pirate treasure chest, just remember that it's not how shiny the chest is, but rather what you put inside it. Just like our homes. They don't always sparkle on the outside the way we'd like them to, but as long as there's love inside, it's all we need.

For this pirate chest, all you'll need is a cardboard box and some good ol' duct tape. You can choose your color, but here it's pictured in standard grey.

DCT Mom thoughts

When we were coming up with the season theme of Finding Your Way Home, this play was one of the greatest inspirations for the theme.

It always amazes me that even when kids are not "playing pirate," they always love to find treasures; any long skinny thing they pick up becomes a sword, and they tend to make up their own words. Pirates are playful. Especially with their hearties (friends) and they ignite our imaginations in the same way that my boys' imaginations explode when crawl into an empty box. It's immediately a spaceship, a monster truck, or, yes, a pirate ship. That idea of traveling, exploring, finding new worlds is one that we often hold onto through adulthood. Sometimes we get comfortable and become homebodies and that's okay sometimes, but sometimes it feels like the older and more tired we get, the easier it is to stop playing. We can't drop anchor for too long or we just hornswaggle our mateys and stuff our faces with grub.

My favorite thing about How I Became a Pirate, though, is how no matter how much fun Jeremy Jacob was having with his pirate buddies and his soccer ball, when it was bedtime, he missed his routine. He wanted to be tucked in and read his bedtime story. That's home. He wanted to be home.

Of course we want you to enjoy your time at the theater, but these activities are for you to enjoy while you are at home, and hopefully bring a little DCT fun into your quality time together.
